Non-workers need to stop chasing away investors

Dear Editor,

Eureka: Highest gas prices in the nation, businesses closing, dandelions throughout the city and homeless people with “Will work for food” signs.

People continually state how we need more good-paying jobs, while others are leaving in droves to beautiful cities where they can make decent wages and purchase a home. For years, Eureka has been known to have made some major mistakes by turning away those who want to invest in our future. Investors won’t invest here with all this negative protesting.

Non-workers tell us what is good for the county, and they have plenty of time to protest any given notice, while the tired working person needs to pay bills, cook dinner and rest so he or she can get up to go to work. Don’t rest yet. Next time you hear someone trying to get rid of existing jobs, rush down and support those trying to keep jobs here — or your job could be next.

In 2015, Los Angeles and Oakland ports will have reached full capacity and businesses worth billions have expressed interest in expanding our harbor and paying union wages in a port that has been operating for 70 years.

Some say, “it would cost millions to do what they want to do.” When people want to invest millions and put Eureka back on the map, for heaven’s sake, quit equating our harbor with Calpine, which had nothing to do with our port. Our port is vital to our existence.
