Dear Editor,
This is a comment on a recent letter by William Hartin who complained about being held responsible for parking illegally on a city street. Some people won’t admit they are the ones doing wrong, even when they know the law and/or are forewarned by notices. These people seem to feel a sense of entitlement to extend their private property rights beyond their lot lines, to infringe upon the rights of others to a safe and accessible street system.
While coming home the other day, I saw a neighbor parked in the middle of the street, on the diagonal, at the crest of a hill, to talk for 10 or 15 minutes to another neighbor on the sidewalk. They weren’t bothered in the least by the fact cars had to go around. My neighborhood has been bad for this sort of thing, as well as parking in the wrong direction or across one’s driveway. Some also have had trailers which sat for months, blocking sight and access to an alley and to a busy street corner.
I am thankful for traffic laws and a police department willing to enforce them. There have been cases whereby breaking these laws — as unimportant as they may seem to my neighbors and Mr. Hartin’s self-interest — have resulted in property damage and personal injury. I would rather follow these laws and be supportive of those willing to uphold them, Thank you, EPD, for being there.
