Donna Louise (Cole) Martzall

Donna Louise (Cole) Martzall, Passed quietly July 5, 2008, at home after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born March 18, 1932, to Russell and Marguerite Cole in Arcata, Calif. She attended Arcata High School with her sisters Ann (Schmid) and Mary (Woodard) where she was a student body vice president. She majored in physical education at Humboldt State University, where she met Chuck, the love of her life.

Thelma Jean Masten Mitchell

Thelma Jean Masten Mitchell passed away on July 5, 2008, in Hoopa. Thelma, who was called Bugs or Bugsey by family and friends, was born in the old Indian hospital in Hoopa, Calif., on April 21, 1940. She was a descendent of the Masten and Marshall families and a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. Thelma lived her entire life in Hoopa with the exception of the World War II years when her parents moved to Eureka, where they both contributed to the war effort by working in the shipyards.

Glynne Rakestraw

Glynne Rakestraw of McKinleyville died July 5, 2008, at the age of 81. She was born on September 5, 1926, to Paul and Ellen Thornburgh of San Diego, Calif. She lived in the San Fernando Valley until 1944, at which time she and her family moved to Fortuna and bought a ranch on Dick Smith Lane off Loop Road. She married Willis Rakestraw in 1948 in the Fortuna Seventh-Day Adventist Church. After high school she worked as a nurse’s aide at the hospital in Scotia and then, after receiving her LVN license from College of the Redwoods, as a surgical scrub nurse at Redwood Memorial Hospital until 1980, often riding to work on her Moped.

W. Neil Van Atta

W. Neil Van Atta went to his heavenly home to rejoin his beloved Eileen on July 3, 2008. Neil was a native of Ohio and was born on May 9, 1921. He and Eileen moved to Humboldt County in 1979 to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Michael Paulus.

Beverly J. (McCallum) Hoppe passed away July 4, 2008, after a valiant effort battling cancer. Born March 13, 1941, in Paterson, N. J., Beverly was the second daughter of John and Pearl McCallum. Beverly is survived by her ever-loving husband Dale, her three sons Steven, John and Michael, and grandsons Johnathan, Cole, and Devin. She was Dale’s loving and beloved wife and companion for 41 years.

Hazel Irene Erbe

Our beloved Hazel passed away at home on June 30, 2008, at the age of 90 years. She was born in Kansas City, Miss., on April 12, 1918, and at the age of six weeks, she became the adopted daughter of Robert and Olvia Erbe. She was raised in Great Bend, Kan., where she attended schools and met the love of her life, Warren. They later married and moved to the north coast and eventually settled in Humboldt County in 1953.

Frank T. Bayliss Sr.

Long time Humboldt County Resident, owner and engineer of Alton Ride Around Railroad, Frank T. Bayliss Sr. was born November 23, 1915, and took his final station departure from this life on June 13, 2008, at the age of 93. He was a wise, opinionated, and out spoken old codger. Set in his ways, some good and some not so good. Frank was a long-suffering diabetic, with increasing complications of that disease. He was for many years a snow bird, wintering in his southern Nevada home. He had a long career as a professional truck driver before retiring to his special avocation of engineer of Alton Train Ride, while making his home on the premises. He is survived by his son Frank T. Bayliss Jr., and daughters Irene Bailey, Patricia Martino, and Sharon O’Conner, 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, scattered thither and yon. He leaves behind many local friends and acquaintances. He was a Fortuna McDonald's breakfast regular.

6/9/28 – 6/30/08 A loving Mother, Sister and friend to all, passed peacefully into Eternal Rest on June 30, in her home. Born June 9, 1928, in Fairfield, Idaho, the third of 10 brothers and sisters. Lucille began working at an early age – a testament to her life long belief in a solid work ethic. Her vocational experiences range from early work in the fields, card dealing, teaching secretarial skills, and a holding variety of book keeping positions in many businesses, including Real Estate and Electrical manufacturing.

Dale Eugene Sherman

Dale Eugene Sherman passed on to eternal life while surrounded by family at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka on Saturday June 28, 2008. Born in Arcata, Calif., on June 11, 1927, Dale grew up on a ranch in the Arcata bottoms. He entered the Navy during WWII and served as a fireman second class on the USS Wiseman stationed in the Philippines. Upon returning home, Dale worked as a truck driver and commercial fisherman before beginning a career as head auto mechanic with Harper Ford Motors and Opie’s Chevrolet and Buick.
