Destination: Fern Canyon

Destination: Pastels on the Plaza

The Arcata Plaza will be filled with color and life this weekend, and not just from the weekly farmers market. On Saturday, the 21st annual Pastels on the Plaza will cover the square with unique chalk drawings to help benefit the Northcoast Children’s Services.

After a five-year hiatus, Civil War Days, a reenactment of the War Between the States will return to Fortuna. On Sept. 20 and 21, residents can come out to Fortuna to see re-creations of battles and demonstrations of medical techniques of the 1860s, and see replicas of cannons, muskets of the era, as well as a replica of a Confederate submarine.

Friends of the Dunes offers educational, informative day at the beach in Manila

The shoulder Aug. 18 to Oct. 26 season is here, but cheap fares to Europe are not. “Two years ago this time of year you’d see airfare for $465,” said Rae Anna Federas of Dalianes Travel. “If you were leaving from New York, there were fares that were $300. It’s a whole different time.”
