There is nothing that makes cairn terrier owners more excited than an opportunity to prove that their little one looks most like the original Toto from the 1939 classic film “The Wizard of Oz.” Everyone remembers the story of young Dorothy Gale, who is transported to the land of Oz, where she encounters many creatures and obstacles that stand in the way of her returning to Kansas to be with her Auntie Em and Uncle Henry.

Celebrating and admiring the majestic species that inhabit our planet is truly one of life’s greatest pleasures. For most, having the opportunity to travel and potentially view these animals in their natural habitat is not very likely; which is why we are so fortunate to have the wonderful Sequoia Park Zoo literally in our back yards.

I guess in many ways, I had a typical girl’s life, which included riding bikes, hula hooping, playing with Barbie dolls, cooking in an Easy Bake Oven as well as escaping to a fantasy land while playing with friends. Most girls at some point dreamed about living a fairytale life, becoming a princess after marrying the handsome prince who will whisk you a way to a castle where you will live happily ever after.

The Old South is remembered for many reasons, some extremely positive and others extremely negative, but the one thing that most people can agree on is that the South is anything if not colorful and that there is a certain style and grace that has been instilled and embodied in Southerners for many generations.

History has shown that dolls have been a part of mankind since the prehistoric age. As children, most of us read the incredible English fairy tale of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” It is not known who spoke or wrote the original tale, but what is known is this tale was passed down through an oral tradition. With this fairy tale being indelibly engraved in our minds from childhood, I was fascinated by the thought of seeing this classic adapted for the stage with an original music score.

A record-breaking day

Published: May 25 2008, 12:19 AM
By Paulette Hawkins

Thursday, May 15, started out as not an ordinary day at all. From the moment that Bailey and I walked outside to pick up the morning paper, I realized this day was unlike any that I had experienced since living in Humboldt County. There was finally, for me, no chill in the air. Amazing. Instantly, I had a smile on my face. I knew the Humboldt Sponsors 11th annual Wine & Brew at Avalon restaurant scheduled for later in the day would be a resounding success; it couldn’t miss. On this very sunny, warm and beautiful day, Eureka hit an all-time high of 80 degrees. It was impossible not to have a fun and wonderful fundraiser. OK, enough reminiscing and pontificating about the weather. We all know the sun god smiled down us and for that we give thanks.

Privilege is defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary as “a right or immunity granted as a peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor.” For me, privilege is much broader than that. I truly believe it is a privilege to work for the benefit and improvement of those in your community. On Wednesday, May 14, at the Red Lion Hotel, the Northern California Association of Nonprofits held its annual event to celebrate and recognize outstanding nonprofit groups and volunteers.
